All things crypto and money

Codebreaker for the Enigma Machine — The Imitation Game

You are probably here to read about crypto and decentralised finance (DeFi), and this first post is to give you an overview of what you can expect from reading or following this publication.

I’m a corporate lawyer based in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Being specialised in banking & finance and debt capital markets, a big part of my job is to help large corporates raise capital. In the world of finance as we know it today, this could mean getting a bank loan from a bank or issuing bonds or shares to the investors. The simple idea about financial services is to connect a saver (someone with money) with a borrower (someone who needs money to make more money).

My journey only started in November 2020 when I got back into crypto again — 3 years after the Great Crypto Crash — but this time with a desire to learn, not to speculate and gamble.

As I dive deeper into smart contracts and DeFi, it got me to re-think everything I thought I knew about finance and financial services, both as a (traditional) banking lawyer and a consumer. It takes real effort to break down the concept of “money” (as we know it) to its most fundamental building blocks, and re-learn how finance can be done in a totally different way. I truly believe that one day (sooner than we think) the DeFi space can grow to be at least a viable alternative to the traditional banking and financial services sector — which means I will probably be out of job by then.

Therefore, in my upcoming posts, I intend to share with you some of my perspective, understanding and some materials (e.g. articles, YouTube videos, Tweets or even memes) that I find helpful or intriguing. My focus would be on the fundamental value of crypto and the technology behind it, but not short term price action analysis. Sharing my knowledge in the public domain would make sure I fact check and keep me (as much as possible) away from any bias. I am a beginner myself, so you can expect my posts to be simple and concise.

I would really appreciate any comments, and am happy to learn and grow together with you!

P/S: The Enigma Machine was one of the earliest application of cryptography in the world. And yes, if you are surprised, the ‘crypto’ in ‘cryptocurrency’ means a lot more than Bitcoin.
